Rendez-vous de la Francophonie is an integral part of celebrations surrounding the Journée internationale de la francophonie (March 20th) organized annually across the globe to promote the French language in its many cultural manifestations.
Creation of Rendez-vous de la Francophonie dates back to 1999. This annual event takes place over a 15 day period and is a unique and precious opportunity to promote the French language and the Francophonie in Canada. Today, more than 9.5 million people in Canada keep the French language alive and make it a vital facet of their communities. You can find them in Acadia, Québec, Ontario, in the West and in Northern Canada. They may be Francophones whose families have been in Canada for generations, or those from the many groups who have immigrated here, or perhaps Anglophones or people from other language groups who choose to learn French. Regardless of origin, Rendez-vous de la Francophonie provides all of these folks the occasion to celebrate together! Rendez-vous attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all environments, Francophone or Francophile, who take full advantage of the occasion to show their dedication to the French language and discover everything they have in common, through exchange and the forging of relationships, exploring what makes them both similar and unique at the same time. Rendez-vous de la Francophonie is the only event that brings such a wide variety of people and activities together across the entire country. Using a celebration theme, Rendez-vous has a mission to reinforce the important contribution of Francophones to the edification of their country, for better appreciation of the French language in its multiple cultural expressions, as well as promoting strong ties between Francophone communities and other social groups within Canada. Rendez-vous de la Francophonie reminds us of our place within the International Francophonie and the special relationship we enjoy with the member nations and governments of this grand family, which spans all continents of the globe.
