{"id":10133,"date":"2022-05-10T13:30:02","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T17:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rvf.ca\/?post_type=nouvelles&#038;p=10133"},"modified":"2022-05-10T13:30:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T17:30:02","slug":"welcome-to-nelson-b-c","status":"publish","type":"nouvelles","link":"https:\/\/rvf.ca\/en\/news\/welcome-to-nelson-b-c\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Nelson, B.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, I thought I\u2019d introduce you to the francophone environment in my home community, Nelson B.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a small but very active francophone community in our area. Nelson&#8217;s population is about 11,000 people. <strong><span style=\"color: #008080\">About 12% of the population speaks French, and about 2% have French as their mother tongue.<\/span><\/strong> This is similar to the percentage of Francophones in B.C. as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afko.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">regional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Francophone Association<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(the Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest, or AFKO), offers a variety of services in French. These include weekly radio shows on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kootenaycoopradio.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">our local community radio station<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, quarterly newsletters, summer day camps, a directory of French-language services, and annual events. I wrote a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rvf.ca\/en\/news\/a-local-milestone-afko-celebrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recently about AFKO\u2019s 35th birthday celebrations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is also an active French-language homeschooling community, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesroudoudousdaycare.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bilingual daycare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a nearby community, Castlegar. There is also an elementary\/secondary French language school, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sentiersalpins.csf.bc.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00e9cole des Sentiers-alpins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> just outside of town. The school has a special program for its grade 8 and 9 students which gives them the opportunity to take regular courses, innovative electives, and then to decide between four \u201cstreams\u201d: <strong><span style=\"color: #008080\">a leadership and community engagement stream, an outdoor stream, a textile arts and cooking stream, or an art stream.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the moment, high school students attend a hybrid program at L.V. Rogers, our local high school.
