Growing up as a non-indigenous Canadian, Indigenous NFB\/ONF filmmakers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/alanis-obomsawin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alanis Obomsawin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/willie-dunn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Willie Dunn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/gil-cardinal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gil Cardinal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> shaped some of my earliest understandings of Indigenous people, history, and culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later, as a young adult, I enjoyed and learned from the films of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/loretta-todd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loretta Todd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/zacharias-kunuk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zacharias Kunuk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/directors\/barb-cranmer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barb Cranmer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More recently, I have appreciated and been moved by Elle-M\u00e1ij\u00e1 Tailfeathers\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/kimmapiiyipitssini-the-meaning-of-empathy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">K\u00edmmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an intimate portrait of the impacts of the substance use and overdose epidemic on the Kainai First Nation and the community\u2019s response.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I also recommend Christine Welsh\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/finding_dawn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finding Dawn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a compelling documentary that puts a human face on a national tragedy \u2013 the epidemic of missing or murdered Indigenous women in Canada. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/mary-two-axe-earley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, by Courtney Montour, is a powerful film about Mary Two-Axe Earley, who fought for more than two decades to challenge sex discrimination against First Nations women embedded in Canada\u2019s Indian Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">June is National Indigenous History Month; a great time to check out the NFB\/ONF\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/channels\/edu_home_indigenous_voices_reconciliation_en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indigenous Voices and Reconciliation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> channel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I will be watching some new movies too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"m_-8243017940979864014gmail-docs-internal-guid-ecc04407-7fff-6c37-ef9c-ffdb9d27fe3c\">Image: NFB\/ONF <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nfb.ca\/blog\/2021\/04\/14\/elle-maija-tailfeathers-cinema-of-empathy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/blog.nfb.ca\/blog\/2021\/04\/14\/elle-maija-tailfeathers-cinema-of-empathy\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1655570052807000&amp;usg=AOvVaw34A2J1mZ2-jjF9M92dZDjT\">blog<\/a>: Elle-M\u00e1ij\u00e1 Tailfeathers with crew on the Kainai Nation.
