I am always trying to improve my French, so I decided to try out the <\/span>Mauril 31-day challenge<\/span><\/a>. The challenge, offered in partnership with the <\/span>Rendez-vous de la Francophonie,<\/span> is available in <\/span>beginner<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>intermediate<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>advanced<\/span><\/a> versions. It offers the challenger a variety of prompts so they can increase their fluency in French. From the simple (\u201cAsk someone the time\u201d) to the complicated (\u201cWatch a movie and describe the plot\u201d). Any French learner can find their level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, the March 23rd prompt (beginner) is to \u201cDescribe Mauril to a friend\u201d <\/span>\u2014 here is my attempt:
\n<\/span>\u201cMauril est une application d’apprentissage du fran\u00e7ais qui permet de regarder des vid\u00e9os et de tester des exercices pratiques pour am\u00e9liorer son fran\u00e7ais.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure my translation isn\u2019t perfect, but it\u2019s probably understandable to most French speakers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s do the challenge!<\/span><\/h4>\n

If you enjoy the 31-day challenge, try the free <\/span>Mauril<\/span><\/a> app. Named for the Honourable<\/span> Mauril B\u00e9langer<\/span><\/a>, the former Ottawa-Vanier MP who championed official languages in Canada, the app was designed by a team of language learning experts in collaboration with the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB). It includes audio and video content<\/strong> selected from Radio-Canada and CBC’s extensive content library.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The process starts with a placement test which suggests a level that will be challenging for the learner but not TOO difficult. Levels range from beginner (one to four) up to advanced (one and two).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The learner progresses at their own pace<\/strong> by watching short snippets of videos accompanied by comprehension questions. There is a Mauril blog and the learner can also take practical challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On a related note, I\u2019ve been using <\/span>Duolingo<\/span><\/a> to improve my French for about three years and Mauril makes a nice counterpoint. It is more immersive and realistic.<\/strong> It\u2019s based on listening, not reading, and it features conversations at a normal speed. It\u2019s also teaching me a bit about CBC\u2019s classic French-language TV shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
