{"id":9071,"date":"2022-01-31T14:34:53","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T19:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rvf.ca\/?post_type=nouvelles&#038;p=9071"},"modified":"2022-01-31T14:34:53","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T19:34:53","slug":"how-to-be-french-in-alberta","status":"publish","type":"nouvelles","link":"https:\/\/rvf.ca\/en\/news\/how-to-be-french-in-alberta\/","title":{"rendered":"How to be French in Alberta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080\">I watched a great video series about the Francophone community in Alberta this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">\u201cHow to be French in Alberta&#8221; is a documentary series filmed primarily in French to reach audiences both inside and outside the Francophone community.<\/span> It was produced by Telus and is available for free on YouTube. There\u2019s a companion series called \u201cHow to be French in British Columbia,\u201d which I will write about next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the things I liked about the series is <span style=\"color: #008080\">how the producers centred each short episode around one theme.<\/span> The first episode is called How To Be French: En Alberta &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NZqhUGskBf0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep1 &#8211; The Beginnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and it features eight older French speakers living in Alberta. They speak about <span style=\"color: #008080\">how they or their families arrived in the province, a bit about their lives, the Francophone communities that they found\/made, and their hopes for the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vnJ8NLqQw3I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep2 &#8211; The Restaurant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is centred around <span style=\"color: #008080\">a restaurant called Chartier in the heart of Beaumont, Alberta, a community founded by French settlers.<\/span> The video takes us behind the scenes and into the hearts and homes of its owners Sylvia and Darren Cheverie. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8WlBT-8SrtY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep3 &#8211; The Politician<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> introduces us to Randy Boissonnault, a Member of Parliament from Morinville, Alberta. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=inwh4N5lRiU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep4 &#8211; The Road Trip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> we take a road trip through the Rocky Mountains with four young francophones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TACHiWb-bxw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep5 &#8211; The Artist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> takes us to<span style=\"color: #008080\"> the studio of Patrick Ares-Pilon, a multidisciplinary artist living in Edmonton.<\/span> His specialty is stereoscopic photography. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=btpw8d7pz_U\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep6 &#8211; The Arrival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> focuses on <span style=\"color: #008080\">how immigration has expanded the francophone community in Alberta<\/span> in a beautiful way. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ZHfJ787S4Y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep7 &#8211; The Barber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> we meet a barber named Lison Laverdi\u00e8re, originally from Abitibi, who now lives in Grande Prairie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CLzuNg85RZ4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep8 &#8211; The Principal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> describes the <span style=\"color: #008080\">ongoing fight for an education system that will safeguard French language and culture in Alberta.<\/span> Today, l&#8217;\u00c9cole Nouvelle-Fronti\u00e8re in Grande Prairie thrives, partly due to its magnetic and energetic principal, Benoit Dub\u00e9. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DndiplpqWbY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep9 &#8211; The Mechanic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> focuses on <span style=\"color: #008080\">Denis St-Laurent, a friendly car mechanic from Grande Prairie.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DxPpha24W4o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep10 &#8211; The Newcomers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> introduces us to <span style=\"color: #008080\">four French-speaking newcomers living in Fort McMurray.<\/span> They share their stories of separation, transition, and resilience as they also recount what they experienced during the devastating wildfire of 2016. We meet Dr. Sonia Thibault in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pC4tsIMJ3Oc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep11 &#8211; The Dentist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Sonia transformed a negative experience with a dentist at a young age into a passion for dental health by becoming a dentist herself. S<span style=\"color: #008080\">he offers healthcare in French, fulfilling a great community need<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TFZlHpO-rog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ep12 &#8211; The Leader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> looks at how <span style=\"color: #008080\">part-time farmer Linda Beaudet has enriched Grande Prairie&#8217;s French immersion community<\/span> by encouraging kids to learn a second language to become good bilingual citizens.
