The Rendez-vous de la Francophonie has announced the winners of this year’s contests. Big congrats to these winners and a tip of the hat to the contest sponsors
Delectable Traditions
From the east coast to the west coast, from south to north, food is one of the ways Canadians share culture and bring our family traditions to life. The Delectable Traditions contest offered all who entered the opportunity to showcase a favourite recipe and a personal story that inspired it. There were four contest winners:
- Young chefs (age 17 and under): Aline Borowiec of Ottawa, Ontario, won a $2,000 cash prize. Her cream pie was a family recipe and a favourite dish of her great-grandmother Hélène as well as her grandmother Jeanne.
- Culinary artists (age 18 and older): Jacques Watso of Odanak, Quebec, won an Air Canada business class trip for two in Canada. His Sagamité Watso is a traditional soup with nine varieties of beans, leached corn, vegetables, secret spices, red deer meat, and a soup bone from the culinary heritage of the Abenakis of Odanak. Jacques suggests serving this soup with bannock and a good cup of black tea.
- Family table (family): Jolene Neufeldt of Elie, Manitoba, won $3,000 cash and a Parks Canada Discovery Pass. Her Cinnamon Babka puts her in mind of her Baba, who recently passed away.
- Chantal Lafrenière of Mont-Laurier, Québec, was awarded the $3,000 cash prize for the public vote.
Write it Right!
Write it Right was a spelling challenge presented by the Language Portal of Canada (an initiative of the Translation Bureau at Public Services and Procurement Canada) and Canada Post. There were two contest winners, one in the elementary school category, and one in the general public category. The school prize of $1.000 was taken by Evangeline School, in Abram-Village, Prince-Edward-Island, and the general public prize of $1,000 was won by Brenda Hanson, of Edmonton, Alberta.
Connected Through Traditions
Lillian Brown of Hants County, Nova Scotia, won the Connected Through Traditions contest, which allowed entrants to test their language skills while learning about traditions. The contest posed five questions developed by the Language Portal of Canada and Lillian won a Via Rail train trip valued at $5,000.
