Workshops

1. Parle-moi d’ça!

Workshop on linguistic insecurity and the history of the Francophonie

“I met a young graduate of École acadienne de Truro, in Nova Scotia. When he was in high school, it was very difficult, if not impossible, to get him to speak in French in the hallways and with his peers. A few years later, I saw him in a music store, where he was working. He spoke to me, his co-workers and the other customers in fluent French. This workshop is inspired by that student.”

The workshop is divided into five parts:

  1. The history of the French language in Canada: Why do we speak the way we do?
  2. Archaisms, anglicisms and neologisms: Demystifying these three terms
  3. Levels of language: Formal, informal and colloquial
  4. Linguistic vitality: Fascinating facts and figures
  5. What’s next? Let’s hold the torch high for Francophone education!

2. The blank page

Poetry and songwriting workshop (in French)

In this workshop students will be challenged to write and create within certain constraints, parameters and vocabulary choices, as a path to greater creativity. Through collaborative and individual work, students will come to see writing less as a challenge and more as a source of fun and exploration. This experience is sure to help fill that blank page!

The workshop is divided into four parts:

  1. Collaborative creative games
  2. Writing within constraints
  3. Vocabulary building
  4. Writing with confidence

The event ends with a 20-minute discussion that will allow the audience to find out more about the Acadian community and other Canadian communities. Our pride in our beautiful Francophone culture unites us, from coast to coast.
